This is an awesome truth about God.
It blows Calvinism out of the water!
In Calvinism God is the cause of all things, he is said to have decreed all things that come to pass.
Here darkness's existence is mentioned.
Physical light is not the issue here, but moral evil is in view
But the source of darkness is not God.
God is said to be the first cause of everything, but here scripture tells us, no.
Evil is other than God, just as light is other than darkness.
The first instance of evil was unknowable by God until it appeared since it is other than God. It was the 1st act of rebellion by a free being to choose other than God.
From then *began* the knowledge of good and evil: a living increase in knowledge like a tree.
The nearest we have in scripture of the first rebellion, the first case of evil, is when it was "found",
You were perfect in your ways from the day you were created,
Till iniquity was found in you.
Ezekiel 28:15
Evil/darkness is the wilful act, the choice to go against the light and thus cause the first shadow, the darkness that exists.
It is not God's direct creation nor His will that it exists nor continues.
That it does continue at this time is only because God is love and does not want any to perish.
He could stop all evil in an instant the moment it rears its head, but then no one would be alive from the moment of their first youthful transgression.
No one could then learn, to reform, to repent, to decide if they wish to stay that way or not.
No one would exist beyond their first sin.
And so begins the proper understanding of evil and the association with God
